Farm/Ranch Irrigation & Water Systems 102
Building directly on the foundational classroom overview of Farm/Ranch Irrigation & Water Systems 101 on July 7th, this follow-up class will take that knowledge to the field. The classroom session is not required to attend this on-farm workshop.
Our host, John Powers of Hopefull Hill Ranch, has implemented a variety of irrigation systems on his property, including pasture sprinklers fed by an NID box located on a neighboring property, an agricultural well, and a drip system supplied by a solar well pump. Learn about John's journey building out the systems, pros and cons of different water sources, redundant system design, irrigation controls, and monitoring. The class will also cover tips for how to troubleshoot these systems when problems arise.
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Workshop
This workshop, led by Ben Baldi, UC Cooperative Extension Small Farms Advisor for Placer and Nevada counties, will be an introduction to the concepts of integrated pest management (IPM) and include a hands-on field demonstration. The session will begin with a discussion of basic IPM principles, followed by a visit to a demonstration site using onion thrips as an example. Participants will learn techniques of pest monitoring, management, and prevention.
Farm/Ranch Irrigation & Water Systems 101
This class, taught by Charlie McIntosh, Conservation Program Manager for Nevada County RCD, will be an overview of irrigation and livestock water systems used on farms and ranches in the Sierra Foothills. This classroom workshop will break down flood/ditch water, drip/micro-irrigation, sprinklers, and water troughs, covering important system components and management considerations. Attendees can expect to gain a better understanding of irrigation/water system design, testing, and scheduling. A brief discussion on optimizing water systems for specific crops, grazing systems, and nutrient management will also be covered.
